| Dear RockPointe Family, I hope you had a tremendous Thanksgiving weekend. We sure did. I am totally fed up, in the best sort of way! We went to a multi-family 3 turkey bash on Saturday and followed it up with the extended Trask clan feast on Sunday. In between, while digesting, I participated in our worship services, sang God’s praises and leaned into His Word. Ron preached a great message on ‘A Church Without Walls’ from Ephesians 2:14-22 on how we must tear down every last barrier in our attitudes and church that hinders anyone from knowing Christ and joining our community. We are on a journey as a church to embrace new Canadians, expand our diversity and reach out to those in the margins of life. He asked us to address the walls in our personal lives that exclude others and with hold the love and message of Christ. And he re-iterated the October Thanksgiving church wide challenge to go and do something kind for a neighbor this month; express your thankfulness, rake their leaves, write a note, bake some cookies, take a gift. Our family got in on the challenge on Saturday. It was a very positive experience. We bought home-made jam at the Farmer’s Market. Mandy made some pumpkin chocolate chip muffins (sugar-free of course :). I wrote cards and then we went and made the deliveries. It turned into great conversations and we were excited to surprise them with our gifts. As Jesus said, it truly is more blessed to give than to receive. At the end of the day I have a higher appreciation for those who live all around us. (If you have taken up the challenge, I would love to hear about some of your experiences too. So all in all, just a wonderful weekend; so good to be with family and friends, to laugh, eat, play, love and revel in God’s goodness. This week I want to talk to you briefly about church Membership. If you have come to the place where you know that you ‘belong’ at RockPointe and have chosen RPC to be your permanent church home – I would like you to express that sense of belonging and ownership by becoming an official Member. The reason you have chosen this as your church home is likely because of the life of Christ reflected in our many Members. Members are the committed core of our church. They serve the body, elect its leaders, shape its direction, and affirm its finances. Each Member adds their own unique contribution to the whole which together forms a strong fabric to clothe the many ministries and people who are in our span of care and outreach. Many people wonder, ‘Why should I become a Member?’, ‘What does it matter?’, ‘It doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.’ These are great questions and are matters we discuss at the Membership Seminar (coming next week, see below). I have also found a great video link from Pastor John Piper to be very helpful in this regard. Its 4 ½ minutes of really good teaching ~ I hope you’ll listen in. Click here to watch!
The process whereby you become a member at RockPointe is as follows: 1. Believe in Jesus for salvation and be baptized 2. Attend a 2 hour Membership Seminar (all about the history, mission and direction of RPC along with the meaning and process of becoming a Member) 3. Complete a Membership Application 4. Have a phone conversation with an Elder to discuss any questions 5. At that point, you’ll be invited to join the Elders, along with other new Members, for supper prior to one of their monthly meetings (your attendance is optional)
Sincerely, Pastor Brent
