47,000.  $808 million.

These are the number of life-altering surgeries and the North American dollar value of those surgeries that have been preformed on the African Mercy since coming into being.  Mercy Ships is a Christian, non-governmental organization that offers free surgeries to people who desperately need but could not hope to afford them in Africa. The vision of Mercy Ships is to bring hope and healing to the world’s forgotten poor.  They accomplish this in large part by the gifts of donors and by recruiting volunteers, both medical and others, who have a heart to serve Christ by serving others.  You can find everything you need to know about Mercy Ships online at www.mercyships.org

And....We have some exciting news to share with you!

We have felt God’s leading to pursue this missions experience together. We believe God wants us to serve on the African Mercy in Sierra Leone for an extended period of time. We have been accepted to serve for 4 months starting September 15th, 2011. Tilly will be working in the OR as a nurse. Jeff is heading to Texas in June for a Marine Safety Training course that will allow him to serve as a deckhand.

We are both really excited to serve God in this way.

Taking on something of this magnitude takes much patience and perseverance. We have had to place many hurdles in God’s hands and ask Him to solve them. It has been amazing and humbling to see the puzzle pieces being put together by God to make this reality. Enough has come together that we are confident that we are going to the ship this fall. ship

Would you please join us as a prayer partner in this adventure?

Please pray: that everything comes together (planning, travel, finances), for successful surgeries and that the people we encounter experience the hope and healing God offers, and that ultimately God is honored in all we do.

There are still a few important things we are waiting and praying for to get us to Africa. The most notable is finances. One of the ways we are hoping to decrease our expenses is to rent out our house while we are away. Please pray for the right renter for our house as this largely impacts how long we can afford to go for. Also, our flights need to be booked and paid for by June 30th at the latest.

As you can probably imagine, this will be a pricey adventure. Crew fees, expenses, and travel costs to and from Africa will total roughly $14500 for a 4 month term ($3625/month). We cannot do this alone. If you feel led by God and are able to help us, we would greatly appreciate it.   There are several avenues available to you and all of them will provide you with a charitable donation tax receipt:
