Q & A

Why should I be in a small group?

  • To grow spiritually;
  • To experience intentional community;
  • To build friendships;
  • To learn about God;
  • To get to know the Bible better;
  • To serve others and reach out;
  • To discover your spiritual gifts;
  • To have some fun!

We all experience community in various ways - but not many of us have community that is dedicated to spiritual growth, studying scripture and serving others.  A small group is an intentional community experience!

What if I am uncomfortable with joining a small group?

Meeting with new people, socializing on a smaller more intimate scale, praying in a group, sharing, opening up and being transparent with others - all of these things can promote fear and hesitancy - they can leave some feeling paralyzed.

A small group can sound weird, intimidating or uncomfortable. For many it sounds reminiscent of a self help group, or a counseling session… but these do not characterize the small group at all!

The bottom line is each one of us must step out in faith from time to time - even in the face of fear, hesitancy and discomfort. It is a step of faith like this that can really catalyze growth and bring you to a place you have never been in your spiritual journey. You will look back and wonder why you were so worried! The spiritual growth you experience and the friendships you form are worth overcoming any fear or hesitancy you may feel.

Just remember that the small group you join is full of people like you. They are people who understand and respect the time it takes to feel comfortable and to share your feelings freely.

What if I have had negative experiences in a small group before?

Certainly there are personalities that clash, leadership philosophies that don’t match up, groups that didn’t work out, or other experiences in small groups that have the possibility to leave a sour taste in your mouth.

At RockPointe, we can’t promise that these things will not happen; but we are dedicated to doing our best to recruit and train excellent leaders. This will help ensure the group's viability and effectiveness.

However, many times we need to forgive, draw on lessons from the past, and try again. Here at RockPointe we can only encourage you to be bold, and confidently step out and join a new group!

Do not let a negative past experience keep you from experiencing this kind of growth and community!

I don’t really think I need community?!

If there is one thing we can deduce from scripture, it is that we were made to live in community. We were made to learn with each other, grow with each other, and journey with each other. Community is even rooted in the nature of God Himself! Individual study and prayer is vital and essential, however it is only a part of the Christian journey. There is much to learn and experience in community. There is challenge, accountability and encouragement. It is fertile ground for spiritual growth.

We encourage you to test this.

We know you will find that a small group community is of great value - and that it provides something that remaining disconnected cannot provide!
