Sharpen is a Technical Arts Training Conference for volunteers and church staff that will give you the opportunity to learn from industry professionals in a small, hands-on setting. The demand for technology in worship has never been greater, and this event will hone your skills in the areas of audio, lighting, video, and media. Our Instructors Marlin Jones - Chief Executive Officer FM Systems & Executive Technical Producer Audio With over 15 years experience in the audio industry, Marlin has become adept in dealing with all aspects of a technical event. His leadership skills and superior knowledge of sound application have enabled him to deal with high profile events such as television shows and touring events at the Saddledome. He has also developed a unique skill set for working with the special needs of Christian organizations. Paul Nadeau-Bonilla - Technical Director - First Alliance Church Lighting Paul originally hails from Three Hills and graduated from the Theatre Program at Mount Royal University. He is presently the technical director at Fist Alliance Church where he has served for the past four years. He is married to Catalina and they live in Southwest Calgary. Chase Florell - Technical Director, RockPointe Church Media /Video Along with managing his own software development company, Chase is the Director of Technical Ministries at RockPointe Church, where he gives technical oversight to 4 RockPointe Churches. His passion for tech has been with him from a very young age. He shows his passion for Christ through his passion for furthering God's word using cutting edge, modern technologies.
Ryan Mann Video Ryan Mann has been involved in filming, directing, and editing for just over 10 years. Currently employed at Rock Pointe Church as Video Producer, he is responsible for the live production of their Saturday night sermon and distributing it for multiple Sunday congregations. He is a husband, father of 2 of the awesomest kids, an Oilers fan, and an avid fly fisher. Ben Burrell Video/Audio/Lighting Ben started his career in pro-audio/video/lighting at his church. He eventually became the technical coordinator for Youth Church Canada and Word in Action Church before taking the position of Technical Director at a 1500 seat theatre located in Surrey, BC. He began with Sapphire Sound at that point as a client, but soon after started working shows and rentals for Sapphire. He transitioned to full time sales and design in August of 2010, leaving British Columbia to start up Sapphire's Calgary sales office. Ben currently lives in Okotoks and is looking forward to watching the Canucks win the Stanley Cup this year.
Courses Sharpen is featuring both introductory audio, advanced audio, lighting, video, and media classes. The classes for each area of the industry will be specifically focused on how they are applied within our Houses of Worship. New this year is “Sharpen Live” – our final class will bring everyone together, as we all apply our knowledge to a typical contemporary worship service. Additional hands on opportunities will be available during RockPointe weekend services on the April 14th and 15th (signup sheets will be available Friday night).
