2013 Flood - Bringing Hope & Blessings

Being the hands and feet of Jesus in the community of Bowness & Benchlands.

RockPointe staff went out with Samaritan’s Purse on Thursday, June 27 to the community of Bowness. The house we were working in was finishing up sooner than we anticipated, and so we decided to help the house next door. The homeowners were an elderly couple with significant health issues. They were feeling very overwhelmed and concerned about the qualifications of the volunteers coming to their door. As soon as the wife saw us in our orange Samaritan's Purse t-shirts, she started to cry and she said "Oh thank you. I know I can trust Samaritan’s Purse.” We were able to ask the Chaplains who accompany each Samaritan’s Purse team to spend some time with this sweet couple. They convinced them to go out and sit in the back yard and have some water and something to eat while we cleared out their basement. It was such a privilege to be the hands and feet of Jesus to this couple and to see how well the entire team of Samaritan’s Purse works together to look after not only the physical needs of people, but also their emotional and spiritual needs as well.

On Sunday June 30, a group of us got together in the morning and baked cookies and muffins. We labelled each bag with “Blessings from RockPointe Church” and then took them out to Benchlands and gave them to some of the residents who have seen such devastating loss. After leaving Benchlands, we went back to Bowness and were able to bless some homeowners and volunteers with baking as well. We were also able to go back to the homes of the two families whose basements we had cleared out with Samaritan’s Purse that previous Thursday, including the elderly couple. This time they welcomed us in with big smiles and warm hugs. We were able to chat with them and find out that Samaritan’s Purse had returned to complete the gut-out by pressure washing and sanitizing their basements, and both families expressed how touched and humbled they were by the help they had received from both Samaritan’s Purse and RockPointe Church. The one family expressed how this was the first home-made food they had received since the flood. Prior to that they had been eating in restaurants and fast food places. Again, it was such a blessing to come alongside these folks and show them the love of Jesus and our church in such practical ways.
