Youth Alpha Stories

2016 was an amazing year for RockPointe Youth and the Alpha Youth Film Series played a major role in that!

At the beginning of the year we kicked off by showing the series to our youth at both Reverb and Resonate and encouraged them to invite their friends. They responded and had many hear the story of Jesus for the first time, it was incredible!

Youth Alpha then launched in 5 high schools across NW & SW Calgary and Cochrane. Over 200 students attended and 70% of these students were either unchurched or from a different religious background. This was an amazing response and incredible answer to prayer! Here are some highlights in the form of quotes from the students who had a major role in leading the charge!

  • "Today in Alpha one of my long term friends became a Christian! I'm so stoked to see what God has in store for his life."
  • "So, I've had this friend ever since grade 1, and he has always been open to talking about faith but I never really asked him how he felt about Jesus. But today in Alpha we were talking about accepting the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts. So I brought up that you need to be a Christian in order to receive spiritual gifts and he wanted to accept Jesus into his life so we prayed together that he believed in Jesus and accepted what Jesus did for him on the cross. He's asked to come to church with me, so I'm bringing him next week to Resonate."
  • "Today we had a total of 33 people at our Alpha club at lunch. We just completed week 9 today where it talks about he Holy Spirit filling our lives. I spoke after the video, talking about how yesterday I asked God to fill me with the Holy Spirit. And then I spoke of how I was filled with love for the people in this group and how I felt a real love for me from God. It felt so real I began to cry, as the Holy Spirit filled me with his love. Standing in front of them all, I said that the rest of the time we had, was meant to be a time to spend quietly either praying, or asking any questions they might have, or talking quietly while respecting their friends. Today was very encouraging to us all."

Later in the year we hosted the first ever Southern Alberta Youth Alpha Training Summit, a gathering of youth, pastors and leaders, school christian clubs and individuals to prepare to run Youth Alpha in their circles of influence.

We had 50 people present, representing 6 multi-ethnic churches from five denominations, plus representation from several high schools including two catholic schools that sent some student leaders.

Our student teams opened the day by sharing their testimonies of God's faithfulness through their obedient efforts from last year. One group of adults in the room said to me "It strikes us that we could have everything perfectly planned, but what we've learned from these kids is that what we need most is faith."

Jason and Shauna Caldwell, parents of Evan and Jordan who died in the sledding accident at COP last February, shared a powerful challenge about the importance of taking the gospel out into the world for the sake of those whose souls are on the line. One of the most profound parts of the challenge was when Jason said "That bobsled track is like a metaphor for life, nobody knows when you'll round the next corner and your time will be up." His plea for urgency was profound!

Finally, we spent a time in prayer for one another that included anointing and commissioning. Some youth pastors/leaders took the opportunity to commission and anoint their kids... but the most moving part for me: I saw two girls who came separately BY THEMSELVES, and just happened to know one another, one from her Catholic School and one from her Public School, laying hands one each other and praying for God to use them for His glory.

Many people left having shared ideas, learned new techniques, and having made contacts that will lead to stronger partnerships in local schools.

We have one team running Alpha and all our other teams are aiming to re-launch in January. Please pray for our youth on these teams, as the Lord's story in all this continues to unfold!
